Garden consultation

Exploring your project

My first visit to you and your garden is simply a chat about your requirements and any ideas you may have for your ideal outdoor room. If you don’t have any ideas, that’s fine too!

It gives me the opportunity to understand your individual needs, get an overall impression of your garden and an initial view of the possibilities and practicalities of the space.

Garden design

From first sketch to final plant

The design process begins with accurate measurements and an assessment of your garden’s characteristics, such as aspect and soil profile. I survey smaller gardens myself and for larger sites, particularly those with complex levels, I commission a topographical survey.
The creative part of the process begins. After considering the practical findings from your survey I work on initial design drawings and sketches, and will usually offer you a couple of layout options to consider. Once we’ve talked these through we’ll look at materials and progress to a finalised plan.

The master plan will include full design details such as materials, structures and water features. A setting out plan for the contractor will also show measurements, any level changes and drainage requirements. If construction or elevation drawings are needed, these would be provided to the contractor at this stage.

I work regularly with a number of trusted and experienced independent contractors but I am also happy to work with a contractor of your choice. I will be available to come on site throughout your build and will schedule a number of site visits to monitor progress, discuss any design details or queries and generally oversee the project.

Planting design

Plants bring a design together, not only creating an inviting ambience but also playing a significant role in increasing the biodiversity in our gardens. Planting with nature in mind and a view to the challenges of our changing climate is an important part of the planting design process.

While I love to complete a project with a beautiful planting scheme I understand that clients may want to do this part themselves, particularly if full planting plans aren’t possible within your budget. If planting plans are required these will include varieties, quantities and spacing of all trees, shrubs and perennials, as well as a plant schedule for the nursery and contractor. If planting is included in your project, I will personally oversee the setting out of the plants.
